The Italian digital wallet system The IT-Wallet was officially established last February and is part of the process of Digitalisation of public administration Italian, as required by the PNRR. Indeed, it is almost a completion of the many steps taken over these decades (considering that the Citizen Portal dates back to 2001, a full 23 years have already passed!).
The Italian Digital Agenda, the CIE, SPID, SEND, the IO app itself, and all other digital citizenship services that our country has adopted will actually converge into the new IT-Wallet which, in turn, will implement the’EUDI-Wallet, The European Union's digital wallet – the Italian one is the first digital wallet with legal value throughout Europe.
Waiting times
By the end of 2024, a digital wallet will be available to store your documents, although you'll have to wait until 2025 to fully benefit from it. times in terms of implementation, they have already been established: DBy 15 July, a small number of citizens will see the digital activation of their Health Card, European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), Driving Licence, and European Disability Card, initially on the IO App. A public launch of the IT-Wallet will follow in late autumn, via an update to the same app. Next year, further services will be provided, and new documents will become gradually accessible, such as ID cards and even educational qualifications and certificates, eventually extending to the control and management of payments, financial data, bookings and services with private companies, or at least that is the ultimate goal. The aspect of payments and banking implications, along with the healthcare aspect, however, are those that raise the main questions about the possible actions that can be carried out through IT-Wallet, even through the involvement of private entities (consider car rentals or booking services, for example).

The IT-Wallet is really easy to use; all you'll need is a smartphone on which to download the’Io App – the IT-Wallet presents itself as the natural evolution of the IO app, which was widely used, especially during the pandemic, and has so far been downloaded 37 million times – and to equip oneself with Spider o della Electronic identity card to access it.
Mandatory to use the services is therefore the’Online authentication with digital identity tools already in use for years among Italians, always with the utmost respect for privacy and the most sensitive data – a thorny issue especially regarding the fiscal and economic uses that can be made with IT-Wallet.
